Geo-location

Natural monument “Djavolja Varos” is situated in the south of Serbia, 27 km south-east from Kursumlija, and 89 km south-west from Nis. It is 288 km far from Belgrade.
This natural phenomenon consists of two, very rare in the world, natural phenomena: earth figures, as specific relief forms which appear very attractive in their surrounding, and two springs of very acid water with high level of mineralization.

These two world rare natural phenomena observed together make “Djavolja Varos” a rare world natural wonder. Attractiveness of these wonders of nature complements the natural environment which looks rough around the earth figures, sometimes almost mystical, and in a wider surrounding lively and pleasant, as well as the remains of the settlement, old church, graveyard and several primitive mine pits.

The locality “Djavolja Varos”has been under state protection since 1959, and in 1995 by the regulation of the government of RS it was proclaimed to be a natural property of a great significance and included into the first category of protection – NATURAL MONUMENT. There are in total 67 protected ha of area. Now at the government of Republic of Serbia there is a proposal for protection further 1014 ha within which other phenomenon are included, characterized for volcanic rocks and relief.
